Discharging in Tripoli Harbour 2010/2011

We are happy to inform you that this year's way of discharging constituted a breach with the past, as for the first time potatoes were discharged per pallet in stead of per bag. This meant that the potatoes arrive in the best possible order at their destiny, as they are no longer handled manually several times during discharging.

This time forklifts were used inside the ship to move the pallets to the middle of the ship's hold. There a sling was put around two pallets at a time, after which the sling hoisted the pallets onto the quay, where another forklift put the pallets onto the awaiting trucks.

This new way of discharging not only prevents damage to the potatoes, but also allows for much quicker discharging. After seeing photos and a video of the loading of the vessels in The Netherlands made by NedaLibya, the harbour committee kindly agreed to a try out. After witnessing the positive results, the committee implemented this method for the complete cargo of both HZPC-shipments. We are grateful to the committee for this opportunity and look forward to seeing this way of discharging continued, and on a final note we would like to request the committee to consider providing more forklifts that enable this way of discharging, as there was a shortage of forklifts in the harbour. Inspection HZPC Seed Potatoes 2010/2011

This year's seed potatoes arrived in two shipments. Both were inspected before departure by Libyan officials who were assigned by resolution of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya General People's Committee for Agriculture, Animal and Sea Wealth.

The inspection was carried out in cooperation with the Libyan Inspection Service for Food & Drugs, as well as the National Seed Improvement Center, the Center for the Control of Agricultural Pests, and the Board for the Inspection of Seed Potatoes.

The first group of officials who inspected the first shipment on 27 and 28 December 2010, consisted of Engineers Mustafa Abu Abbud, Yussuf Al Arabi, Salem Amouri, and Ayad Alhaji. The second shipment took place on 12 and 13 January 2011. This time the inspection was carried out by Engineers Mustafa Abu Abbud, Salem Amouri, and Ezeddin Efhema.

The inspectors verified that the goods were in compliance with all the required technical specifications. After completion of their findings, the officials signed their report that the cargo to be shipped was in good order, free of quarantine pests, and in compliance with all relevant Libyan laws and regulations.

NedaLibya Field Day

NedaLibya Field Day

Our Annual Field Day is scheduled to take place around harvest time at the NedaLibya Demonstration Field, allowing for a close-up view of the latest HZPC-varieties, the Dacom Agri Yield Management System, and Grimme Machinery & Technology. Whether you grow potatoes or other crops, whether you are distributor or otherwise professionally active in the potato value chain or in agriculture/agrotechnology in general, you are most welcome at our Annual Field Day. A special invitation goes out to students, next generation's professionals.

HZPC's latest varieties

During our Field Day specific attention will be paid to various new HZPC-varieties. As the Libyan market is at a new turning point towards it's future, expectations are that the Libyan consumer will be looking for ever more variety. Why eat only Spunta, when there is a whole array out there of different flavours, textures and aromas to be experienced? A factor undoubtedly of interest to innovative farmers with an eye for opportunity, keen to anticipate the versatile wishes of their customers.

By growing different varieties farmers can spread their harvest times, resulting in a more continuous and varied supply of fresh potatoes for the local market. In this way they stand more chance of obtaining better market prices for their product. And let's not forget that Libyan export is on the rise, and the Libyan processing industry for the production of French fries and crisps is steadily developing. This makes it increasingly interesting for farmers to introduce more variety into their potato crop.

Dacom's Agri Yield Management System

During our Field Day the Agri Yield Management System will be introduced. This integrated system for profitable and sustainable agriculture enables effective control of diseases and insects, as well as irrigation and fertilisation management. The Dacom system has proven in practice that yields can be improved and costs lowered, while at the same time impact on the environment and water wastage can be lessened. An explanation will be given of how the Agri Yield system works and how these benefits can be achieved.

Grimme Machinery & Technology

With Libya's local market making a fresh start, and opportunities for export and processing on the rise, now is the best time for growers to start mechanising their potato cultivation. The advantages of mechanisation are numerous. Good soil preparation, sufficient hilling and exact planting not only boost yields, they also give more control over the growing process as a whole. This makes for a more regular crop and more efficient harvesting, enabling growers to deliver the quality desired by the market. Being able to rely on their machinery also makes growers less dependant on the availability and fluctuating prices of labour.

About

Major changes & market opportunities

chipsLibyan potatoes ready for export

In recent years Libya has undergone major changes, that have also left their mark on the Libyan potato market. Opportunities have arisen in various market segments, such as processing for French fries & crisps, as well as export. The local market is also experiencing change as Libyan consumers increasingly look for more variety in the potato products on offer.

In response to these opportunities Libyan growers and entrepreneurs face a lot of decisions, often with costly investments and long term consequences: how to mechanise potato cultivation, how to maximise yields and prevent diseases during the growing season & how to safeguard these yields in storage, how to prepare for retail and export, and the all-important question: which varieties to choose for the coming years?

Since its foundation in 2007 NedaLibya helps Libyan potato growers and entrepreneurs in the potato business make the right decisions by offering advice and quality products to support them throughout the potato chain, i.e. in their production process from starting material to final product.
